BEFORE COMMENTING, you MUST cover all the material in LECTURE 1.
Identify a group (ethnic, national, geographical etc.) that you belong to or you descend from.
Ex: Italian, Caribbean, African American, Vietnamese, German, Brazilian, Native American etc.
Even if the roots are far far in the past (English, Scottish, Swiss), even if you do not identify with those roots, list the stereotypes about that group. This is a serious exercise. Think in these terms:
"What do people in general think, what kind of automatic association do they make in their minds when they hear that you are -- for instance -- Asian Indian? Or Russian."
Click COMMENT below:
Write a bullet-type list; each item one, max two words. Keep it telegraphic.
REPLY: choose a list from a classmate that introduces a stereotype you didn't know existed, and write a comment about it.

Hello Khadijat,
DeleteA stereotype that shocked me that you mentioned was the "hungry for power" stereotype. I thought that it was interesting to point out because I don't think I have ever considered someone with African descent being "hungry for power" and do not necessarily see it as a negative thing. That is something I newly learned.
Hello Khadijat and Naquel,
DeleteI too was unfamiliar with some of the stereotypes listed about Africans. I agree with Naquel, "hungry for power" is definitely not a negative thing. The word "stereotype" can be easily misinterpreted as negative because of the generalization it places on a group due to a behavior. I believe cultural stereotype can also be positive. "Hungry for Power" can be interpreted as wanting to succeed. Being traditional and cultural shows that Africans are doing everything to preserve their culture and that is a beautiful thing.

Hey Shameza. I found it interesting that you said Guyanese people are stereotyped as violent or wife beaters. I went to high school where it was predominantly Guyanese people and they were usually the nicest at least to me. I never seen that kind of behavior.
DeleteHi Shameza. I didn't know East Indians love alcohol. It is interesting to know that some cultures beside Russians and Irish are known as alcohol lovers too.
DeleteHi Shameza. I was also surprised to hear that Guyanese were violent and wife beaters. From all the stereotypes I have come across, that was definitely never one of them. I can't say that I know anyone Guyanese but from what I have heard, this does not sound like them.
DeleteHello Shameza, I have a lot of Guyanese friends however I never knew or heard that they are wife - beater, very interesting.
DeleteThis is a complete falsehood.Guyanese men are very family oriented and always put family first. They are very gentle and take consumate pride in the achievement of their children and ensure the family a high standard of living.
DeleteHello Vonetta,
DeleteThis is a stereotype about Guyanese men and community that I personally witnessed. It currently a big problem in the country of Guyana. I do see it more in the Indo-Guyanese community. Women in the community often accept this behavior and will never speak of it because they are ashamed and sadly it goes unnoticed. Alcohol plays a big part of this behavior in men. This is facts and I disagree with you that its false. Both of my Grandfathers were women-beaters and my grandmothers stayed because in that time in the community if a woman leaves a man they are looked down upon. It's a stereotype so I am not saying its all Guyanese men but it exist often enough. The first murder/homicide for 2018 happened in a Guyanese community and that's just one of many in the community of Richmond Hill Queens. Below is a link to the article if you would like to read more one it.

Hello Shameza,
DeleteIt's my first time ever hearing about this group. I see there are harsh traits as well as good traits. I'm sure everyone is different. Every ethnic group has a good group and a bad group of people after all.

hi Kristina, what do you mean by Flashy? do people like to show off their wealth? if that is the case, it is in every ethnic or country.
DeleteHi Khadijat. When Russian people dress up, they go all-out in tall heels, glittery miniskirts and fur coats. Every time I stop by Brighton Beach, I see old Russian people dress up in fancy and flashy clothes which I didn't even know existed.
