Discussion n. 3: Father Guido Sarducci (due June 8)

The comedy video about the 5-minute university presents a point of view we are very familiar with because we all thought that way at some point.

Without going into jeremiads about the stuff you must study that you will never use in life, think deeply about what is missing in today's standard college curriculum. What do you want more of?
Please, don't focus only on your major (more chemistry labs, more management courses) but rather on the kind of tools that a college should help you acquire.

And, by the way, did you like the video?

COMMENT and REPLY to at least one comment that impressed you for originality.

  1. More practical curriculum.
    Explanation:
The students should be equipped with life tools. Most of the things taught at schools are theoretical. Students should be taught things that apply in life. For instance, there should be more ethics class. This should teach student how to interact with people and behave responsibly.

    1. I agree 100% about a practical curriculum for students. Life tools are always needed and will not be lost after college. It is crucial that students understand how to interact with others because that is a large part of the workforce and sometimes college focuses too much on the unnecessary things.

    2. I agree with your post. I think that there needs to be a curriculum that adapts to what we do everyday and can help us in situations we might face in day to day life.

    3. I totally agree in fact my post was very similar to your post, I too believe that one can be prepared better for the real world with nice moral and ethical codes.

  2. I believe more hands on and practical courses will be benefical in the college setting. Most of the time we are taught theory and philosophy which is necessary to challenge social constructs and bring up other ways of thinking but this sometimes does not translate into getting actual jobs done. After college a lot of time students are stuck never learning how to do taxes or pay bills because these standard living courses are not provided unless it obtains to your major. Everyone should leave college with an overall understanding real life and educational lessons.

    1. I agree there should definitely be more hands on and practical courses to prepare students for real world challenges.

  3. I think that we definitely need something in college that will help us in day to day life. Some classes that I think there should be more of- definitely classes that give a “Home Economics” experience. Classes that will teach you how to handle life challenges around the house. Not only that, but also classes that will help with any job, like more business classes. But they should be universal business classes, so you can learn how to be successful in any business.

    1. I agree. Even if I dont want to be a business major I feel like a general business lesson that can help in any profession would be beneficial.

  4. I feel colleges should provide more life tools that will be much needed in our lives. I feel like we learn about what economics is but not how we can maneuver through life using it. Meaning, more classes on how to budget, what is credit, how to take out a mortgage. We leave college not knowing these things and end falling into debt. I did the video. Even though it was meant to be funny it hit on a lot of good points.

    1. I agree that after graduating college we don't know simple things that we must know such as how to take out a mortgage and how to do taxes unless you take a course that is required for your major.

  5. I really enjoyed watching the video about 5-minute University. The irony of his words is funny. Unfortunately, the saddest part about it is that most of the things he said were true.
I will not go into details that the campus inside is very dirty, especially the bathrooms. The things in the classrooms must be upgraded such as desks and writing boards. For the money we pay for tuition, the condition of college is unacceptable. And it is very hard to enjoy studying in the environment like that. When it comes to teaching techniques and useful time in class things are better at those but still need improvements. The thing that is missing in teaching technique is communication outside the school. I would love to experience doing some school work outside in the field. For example, for accounting class to go to a real accountant firm to see how things really work. For a business class, to go to a profitable company and ask questions based on the class topics. And for Italian language go to Italy, just kidding, although it would be awesome.

    1. Kristina,
You're idea of hands on experiences of the real world is what I believe college should incorporate in their course requirements. College should be able to prepare you for the real world and I believe it currently focuses more as a screening tool for future employer.

  6. Earlier this month I came across an interesting article about a class being offered at Yale University on "How to be Happy". It focuses on the fact that college students are unhappy and overwhelmed. It teaches mental health and self-care and focuses on "behavior change, the science of how you move your behavior around,” and “How do you actually change your habits and use your situation to your advantage?” I believe this is a wonderful change to college courses and should be a requirement for all students in every college. The key to success in the real world is being happy and everyone are on the quest to happiness. Learning about keeping your mind healthy will make you a well-rounded person in your personal and professional life. This I believe is a very positive change to college courses and would like to see it in every college.
Here is the link to the article if anyone is interested in reading more about the course.

    2. I agree. I enjoyed how Father Guido said "College is all about mesmerization" He's not wrong. That is exactly what is all about. Just doing the bare minimum is the best. I took a Spanish class and all I remember too are the basic responses.

  7. Personally I feel for me nothing is missing. I'm just trying my best to graduate no matter what it takes. Honestly I think we would want more weekend classes because people have to work during the week most of the time so more weekend classes would help many work on time to receive their degree instead of their job holding them back.

  8. I really enjoyed the video as it showed some aspects that are not spoken of in a typical regular class.
I believe that our system lacks on the amount of ethics it provides to its students. In my view the system should give a lot more classes on morals and ethics.

  9. In my opinion, I feel that there should be more real world application offered within the curriculum. In my 3 years of undergrad I have found that few professors are able to engage their students in a way that truly expands our minds because they have such a rigid course outline. That is also what I found to be most agreeable about the 5-minute video, regarding the fact that most of us spend our college careers memorizing so much information to an overwhelming point that by the time we are finished its as though we have missed what the college experience is supposed to be about and the acquisition of knowledge on an in depth level, rather than just for exams which ultimately is forgotten to make space for the new information we have to cram into our brains the following semester.

  10. In terms of course curriculum and activities I found myself able to hold a diverse conversation versus a conversation that I would have had when I was in high school ,my vocab and my understanding of the world has vastly improved versus the way it was before college . In terms of anything missing I think a more community based environment would be essential when it comes to what is missing. I believe that we became so immersed in our studies and in learning the curriculum that we missed the full point of college which is to be able to interact with the environment itself with people in that environment not just with our books.
